Every office coffee provider now has a sustainability page. Read ten of them and you'll find the same three moves: compostable pods, carbon offsets, and trees planted per order. All three share a quiet assumption — that the waste gets made, and then something nice happens to apologize for it.
The pod problem, honestly stated
A 25-person office running a pod machine goes through roughly 6,000 pods a year. "Compostable" pods are better than plastic ones — if they reach an industrial composting facility, which most municipal programs in Ontario handle inconsistently, and many office waste streams don't sort at all. In practice, a large share of compostable pods take the same truck to the same landfill, where they behave much like the plastic they replaced.
Offsets and tree programs are accounting instruments. They can be legitimate, but they don't change what's in your office's bin. If your company reports on waste reduction, an offset does nothing for that line.
What structural zero-waste looks like
Bean-to-cup machines change the physics rather than the accounting. The machine holds whole roasted beans and grinds per cup, so there is no pod, no filter, no pouch — the packaging simply never exists. The brewing process has exactly two outputs:
- Spent grounds, which drop into an internal bin and — in our service — are collected weekly and composted into organic fertilizer.
- Cleaning wastewater, which collects in a sealed internal bin and is removed for proper disposal instead of going down your drain.
That's the whole waste stream. Not offset, not diverted-if-sorted-correctly: eliminated at the source.
Questions to ask any provider
- What physically leaves our office as waste each week, and where does it go?
- Is the "compostable" claim industrial or backyard compostable, and who transports it?
- Does the sustainability program change the product, or just the marketing?
